What with finishing number 1 in the HSBC World Rankings and winning the HSBC Classic Series, Mary King has had one of the most successful years of her career! We received a letter from her letting us know more about what she’s been up to for the last few months and her excitement about the Olympics.
Preparations are well underway for London 2012. Selectors have said that they are interested in Imperial Cavalier or Kings Temptress with Apache Sauce also being on the long list but in the lower group of horses. All three horses will be entered for Badminton but Mary thinks she’ll only run Apache Sauce there, leaving the other two for Chatsworth the following weekend.
“The Germans are very strong, but the New Zealanders, Australians, Americans and French are all on the up so we need to leave no stone unturned if we are going to produce our best at the end of July (and then hope our best is good enough!)”
Mary’s daughter Emily has also had a great autumn season and was picked to ride as an individual at the Junior European Championship in Portugal. “What a fantastic experience it was for her. Riding Patsy Mason’s Mr Hiho she nearly won the Individual Gold, but a second show jump down, having been in the lead, put her down to 7th. It was very disappointing for her but I feel it was not a bad thing she didn’t win at her first attempt. She was the youngest in the GB squad and has 3 more years of junior level eventing. It has certainly given her a big boost for the future.”
In other news, Fernhill Urco is unfortunately having some time off due to an injury he sustained early in the autumn. King Albert, one of Mary’s homebreds, has been sold after it was decided he’d reached his limit with Mary. Hopefully his new owner will have lots of fun with him!
If you’re wondering what Mary will be spending her deserved winnings on, she is currently looking for a new 6 horse lorry now that Emily is entering more events.
Mary has been spending the rest of her time teaching, doing talks and lecture demos and trying to find future stars, what a busy woman! We have also received her provisional programme for 2012 which we will post soon.
